It\u2019s our planet\u2014we need to look after it.\u201d Getting to the polar regions, they added, \u201cis incredibly difficult\u201d and \u201cincredibly expensive,\u201d so HX\u2019s willingness to provide transport and infrastructure has proven invaluable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/latteluxurynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Verena-Meraldi-HGR-147895_1920-Photo_Andrea_Klaussner-1132-x-560.png\" alt=\"HX science\" width=\"1132\" height=\"560\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>The company\u2019s mission goes beyond supporting professional researchers, with HX actively involving guests in citizen science projects, transforming travellers into contributors to real environmental monitoring. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through initiatives like <em>Happy Whale<\/em>, guests photograph whales during expeditions, upload the images to a shared platform, and later receive updates when the same whale is spotted once again. Other activities include plankton sampling, microscopic analysis of bird feathers, and environmental impact studies\u2014all conducted in the ship\u2019s onboard Science Centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are really trying to wake up the curious child in all of us,\u201d Meraldi said. \u201cOnce you have managed to get people\u2019s attention, they want to know more, to involve themselves more.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Education has become central to the HX philosophy. In partnership with the <strong>University of Tasmania (UTAS)<\/strong>, the company last year launched a free <strong>Antarctic learning course<\/strong>, taken by over 2,300 travellers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNinety-eight percent of people that had done the course said they felt more aware of their responsibilities after going to Antarctica,\u201d Meraldi reported. Following that success, HX has announced plans to expand its curriculum to include Arctic destinations such as Greenland, Svalbard, and Alaska.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/latteluxurynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/Alaska_College_Fjord_MS_Roald_Amundsen_HX_47001_Photo_Ted_Gatlin-1132x560-2.jpg\" alt=\"HX science\" width=\"1132\" height=\"560\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Since its debut, HX\u2019s partnership with UTAS has evolved into a model of collaboration between tourism and research. In 2024 alone, HX hosted \u201cover 80 researchers and more than 20 research projects.\u201d The studies span a wide range of disciplines &#8211; from marine biology and spatial science to creative arts and environmental communication &#8211; making HX\u2019s ships vital platforms for data collection and education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For in Meraldi&#8217;s view, sustainability isn\u2019t an add-on &#8211; it\u2019s an obligation. \u201cSuccess isn\u2019t just about a balance sheet,\u201d she stressed. \u201cIt\u2019s really about how we change behaviour, how we engage people in the destination, and what they do afterwards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe do not protect what we don\u2019t know, what we don\u2019t understand,\u201d one scientist said. \u201cBy helping people understand, we change how they live.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As global research budgets shrink, HX Expeditions is turning adventure tourism into a lifeline for science, transforming its fleet of polar vessels into floating research hubs.
